Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan is the new strain on the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) ties.

The star was a guest at the inauguration of the northern carriageway of the Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli sealink, India’s first sea bridge, on Wednesday. His presence at a government event hasn’t gone down well with a section of the local Congress, the senior coalition partner of the NCP in the state.

The Congress is upset with the NCP for inviting the actor. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan claimed he didn’t know Bachchan was invited. “… I wouldn’t have attended the function had I known he would be present.”

Maharashtra PWD Minister Jaydutta Kshirsagar invited him, said the actor. “… The minister incharge of the function invited me through his official letter head,” he told CNN-IBN.  

The Congress, at the national level, justified state leaders’ anger against the star. “…Our workers are angry about the fact that he has identified himself with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi,” said media chief Janardan Dwivedi.

The star was last month appointed the brand ambassador of Gujarat, where Modi, who the Congress blames for 2002 anti-Muslim riots, is the CM.

The NCP took a different view. It wasn’t a party event but an official function where all celebrities and even the opposition leaders were invited, it said. “So, there is nothing wrong if the invitation had been extended to icons like
Amtiabhji and Sachin Tendulkar,” general secretary Tariq Anwar told HT.

The Congress backed Chavan. “The Chief Minister has already given a clarification. Nothing more is required now,” Dwivedi said.

Once close, relations between the Bachchans and the Gandhi family have been troubled for many years now.

Bachchan said he was asked to promote tourism.

Walk through the cosmetic aisles of any department store and the Benefit counter will immediately snare your attention with its whimsical packaging, bright colors and unusual products.
Identical twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford launched Benefit in 1976 in San Francisco. Today the brand is sold worldwide and boasts 4,000 counters. In addition, Chicago is home to Benefit boutiques and Brow Bars. The sisters, who hail from Indiana, give us the Benefit of their knowledge:

Jane and Jean Ford started out as models in New York City in the ’70s. They got their big break with a Calgon Bath Beads commercial.

Jane and Jean Ford are known as the “Concealing Queens” for their fake-it foundations and primers.

Question: The story behind your launching the first Benefit product, Benetint, in the ’70s is very interesting.
Jean: The first product that really put Benefit on the map was Benetint. It all started in 1977, when my sister Jane and I were running a tiny makeup shop in San Francisco’s mission district. An exotic dancer came into our shop asking for a makeup product that she could put on her nipples to make them more rosy and perky. It needed to be long lasting, so it would stay put through all of her dance routines.

Jane: That night, we went home, and pulled out our blenders. We worked in the kitchen all night, until we achieved the perfect rosy stain, a secret concoction containing steamed rose petals. Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice 3″ starts Sunday and is bookended with notorious characters — recovered coke snorter Darryl Strawberry and indicted former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

But Trump says the show had lined up other celebs who would have been even more controversial.

NBC rejected those scandalicious celebs because TV execs “just felt it was not appropriate, because of the difficulties” such celebrities could have wrought on NBC’s bottom line.

Trump wouldn’t tell me their names. I asked if he was talking about forever nemesis Rosie O’Donnell. Nope, he said.

“She would be somebody very acceptable to an NBC,” he says. “I’d love firing her.

“Rosie’s got nothing else going. She should do (‘Apprentice’).

“She lost her husband,” Kelli Carpenter O’Donnell in a breakup. “I wrote a congratulatory letter to Kelli: ‘What took you so long?’”

“Apprentice” contestant Bret Michaels is excited to film “Rock of Love 4″ eventually, but he has asked VH1 for a vacation first.

Michaels — who performs March 27 at Terrible’s in Primm — is in “heavy” talks with VH1. But he’s on tour all year, with a new Poison album coming soon.

And he wanted to spend time on “Apprentice.” On the show, he Clooney’d up his look, trading rock duds for a suit.

“I’ve never really worn a tie. Not because I hate them. It’s just not my thing,” he says.

“I was like, ‘I got this Armani suit. I have to take out the shoulder pads from 1984, but it’s a classic!’”

In person, Trump was funny and self-deprecating, Michaels says.

Wait . . . yes. That’s right – that Enquirer. The one that starts with E. The one at the checkout of your friendly local grocery store. The one that grabs you with PALIN WAR: TEEN PREGO CRISIS, or TIGER IS A DRUG ADDICT!, or ‘LOST’ STAR CHEATING SCANDAL!
And there’s the famous FAMILY EATS BARBECUED MEAT – FINDS IT WAS THEIR DOG. Or who could forget this classic from 1963? I CUT OUT HER HEART AND STOMPED ON IT!
But it’s headlines such as ’09′s JOHN EDWARDS IS DAD OF MISTRESS’ BABY! that might score the Enquirer a Pulitzer.
For months, Barry Levine, its executive editor, had been pressing the Pulitzer Prize committee to consider the Enquirer’s 2009 reporting on presidential candidate Edwards’ extramarital affair and – all right, LOVE CHILD.
At first the Pulitzer committee said no, in part because the Enquirer sometimes pays informants, a practice that is known as checkbook journalism and shunned, for ethical reasons, at most newspapers.
That set off a campaign, mostly on Web sites such as the Drudge Report, to let the Enquirer play.
On Feb. 18, in a startling turnaround, the Pulitzer board said OK. The Enquirer’s work is now being considered in two categories: investigative reporting and national news reporting. Winners will be announced April 12.
"We don’t publicly discuss entrants," Sig Gissler, Pulitzer administrator, told ABC News. "I can only say that we apply the eligibility criteria and if an entrant meets the criteria, we accept the entry."
